Rondom al het gedoe van de gehackte servers van Sony zijn er natuurlijk heel veel experts die onderzoek doen, maar er zijn ook mensen die er altijd mee bezig zijn om zulke dingen te voorkomen. Zo ook Dr. Gene Spafford, een expert op het gebied van onder andere netwerkbeveiliging, oftewel een cyber-security expert.

Deze man heeft tegenover het Amerikaanse Congres (U.S. House of Representatives’ Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade) gezegd dat Sony meldingen heeft genegeerd van de zwakke punten in hun servers.

“On a few of the security mailing lists that I read, there were discussions that individuals who work in security and participate in the Sony network … had discovered that the network servers were hosted on … very old versions of Apache software that were unpatched and had no firewall installed. These were potentially vulnerable, and that they had reported these in an open forum that was monitored by Sony employees, but had seen no response and no change or update to the software.”

Dat is niet het enige, want Sony is op dezwakheden gewezen zo’n twee á drie maanden voor de eerste aanvallen op het PSN, aldus Dr. Gene Spafford.

“Two to three months prior to the incident where the break-ins occurred”.
