Een week geleden kon je lezen dat Fergal Gara, baas van Sony Computer Entertainment UK, vond dat de PlayStation Vita te weinig verkocht werd. Vandaag komt Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton echter met de mededeling dat hij de verkoopaantallen nog wel acceptabel vindt. Hij zegt dat je in deze markt niet te weinig of teveel kan verkopen, aangezien het succes van een apparaat heel snel kan omdraaien.

In this industry, you can’t get too high or too low, because it moves very quickly. I think there’s an acceptable number – and [the number] we’ve sold: That’s acceptable. If it was triple that, I’d be happier. If it was one-third, I’d be disappointed.

Ook de PlayStation 3 heeft volgens Tretton in dezelfde situatie gezeten, en hij is ervan overtuigd dat ook de PS Vita zijn succes weet te vinden. De PlayStation 3 is de afgelopen jaren namelijk razend populair geworden en over de verkoopcijfers mag ook zeker niet geklaagd worden.

“Even the PlayStation 3 survived a bumpy start – and while that system isn’t the king of the console hill like the PS2 was in the previous generation, it’s still an incredibly popular and profitable device.”

Ook voelt Tretton zich beter over de toekomst van de PS Vita dan vier maand geleden, want met games als Call of Duty: Black Ops Classified, Assassin’s Creed: Liberation en een hoop andere titels kan de PS Vita zeker een succes worden.

“Anything with great rewards is going to come with great challenges. We felt if the tech was there, and the game support was there, then the audience would be there. … I feel much better about it now than I did four months ago.”
