PlayStation VR zal volgend jaar in de eerste helft van 2016, dus nog voor juli, in de winkels moeten liggen. Dan zal de virtual reality headset voor de PS4 lanceren met een aantal games, maar geen applicaties voor films of muziek. Toch geeft Shuhei Yoshida aan dat hij non-gaming applicaties voor PlayStation VR erg belangrijk vindt.

Zo ziet Yoshida erg graag de ‘360-graden’ video’s en ervaringen in combinatie met PlayStation VR. Volgens hem zijn de entertainment bedrijven die dit produceren op de hoogte van de impact en kracht van dit nieuwe medium. Volgens hem krijgen mensen echt het gevoel dat ze zich daadwerkelijk op de plekken bevinden die VR ons laat zien.

Hij ziet dan ook graag meer non-gaming applicaties verschijnen, omdat dit volgens hem een enorme toevoeging zou zijn aan PlayStation VR. Sterker nog, hij noemt het zelfs erg belangrijk. Volgens de president van Sony Worldwide Studios zullen mensen dan sneller de technologie adopteren, omdat het meer is dan alleen een gaming accessoire.

“It’s going to be very important. I’m a huge fan of the 360-degree videos and experiences that those entertainment companies and new startups are producing. They clearly understand the impact and the power of this new medium. People feel like they are in these experiences at the places that the video was shot instead of watching it remotely from within their console at home. The power of these mediums can be communicated in non-gaming form. And actually in many cases it’s better to have these experiences, rather than just games, so that the mass audience will start to notice that, ‘Wow, this is something that I should be checking out. This is way more than the new form of gaming.’”
