Het is nog altijd wachten totdat Sony de extra SSD slot vrijgeeft voor een uitbreiding van het opslaggeheugen van de PlayStation 5. Dat begint zo langzamerhand wel tijd te worden, want hier op de redactie hebben we continu te maken met te weinig schijfruimte, wat vrij vervelend kan zijn.

Seagate claimt nu echter een oplossing paraat te hebben, zo werkt de nieuwe Seagate FireCuda 530 NVMe m.2 PCIe Gen 4 SSD prima met de PlayStation 5. Seagate heeft dit samen met Sony getest en de resultaten zijn goed te noemen. Zo levert deze SSD 7300 MB/s leessnelheid en 6900 MB/s schrijfsnelheid en dat is meer dan de vereiste van de PlayStation 5.

Zo zegt Jeff Park van Seagate desgevraagd tegen Finder.com:

“We have done some testing with Sony on the PlayStation 5 and today we can confirm that the FireCuda 530 with the heatsink has met all the PS5 requirements. With the PS5 design, the SSD card slot is very narrow, so there’s not much room for the SSD to mount. However, with the FireCuda 530 – even with the heatsink on the top – the slim design allows for it to fit. Of course, the FireCuda 530 without the heatsink is slimmer, so both of them will fit into the PS5.”

Deze SSD komt in augustus uit en dat in diverse varianten. Zo is de goedkoopste $199 (500GB) en dit loopt op tot $1429 (4TB), waarbij de varianten met heatsink nog net even ietsje duurder zijn. Gezien Seagate nu compatible SSD’s klaar heeft, is het aan Sony om de desbetreffende slot vrij te geven. Hopelijk gebeurt dit snel.
